British drivers on Lanzarote should be aware of the UK’s recent decision to change the Highway Code, echoing rules that have been obligatory in Spain and other European countries for several years.
In the UK, cars turning at a junction must now give way to pedestrians crossing or waiting to cross, regardless of whether there is a zebra crossing or not. A similar rule has long applied in Spain, where the vulnerability of pedestrians and cyclists has led to increasing amounts of rules giving them priority.
The UK will also abolish its rule that says that only pedestrians who are on a zebra crossing have right of way. This will be extended to those waiting to cross.
