Oswaldo Betancort has served as the Mayor of Teguise, Lanzarote’s largest municipality, for eight years and commenced his third term at the head of the Ayuntamiento earlier this year, when he also won a seat as a representative in the Canarian parliament.
Pancho Corujo is late for our interview, partly because he’s been stopped a few times on the way. Arrecife locals recognise the young tenor from TV and his popular Facebook page, where he often posts funny videos, and they want a chat and maybe a selfie. His popularity is no mystery – he’s an open, friendly character with a touch of that swagger that every good tenor needs.

José Juan Cruz is already a familiar face to Tías residents, having been the Mayor of the island’s most important tourist municipality for several years until 2011, when he was ousted by Pancho Hernández. This June, however, “Pepe Juan” managed to retake Tías for the Socialists after a close contest and a pact with councillors from Podemos and Avanza Lanzarote.
Astrid Pérez was sworn in as Mayor of Arrecife in mid-June, after one of the least expected pacts to follow the local elections. It’s the first taste of real power for a woman who has become one of the best-known faces in Lanzarote politics .
Antonio Cedrés delivered the mail in Mácher for 38 years before retiring in March this year. Born and bred in the village, he’s seen the way it’s changed, got to know the locals and handed over hundreds of thousands of parcels, letters, bills and Christmas cards.
