The Canarian Tourism Minister, Jessica De León, has responded to the inclusion of the islands on the Fodor’s Travel guides “No list” of destinations that conscientious tourists should consider avoiding.

De León said, “Appearing on these types of lists is obviously bad news for the Canary Islands and for the tourism sector, but the situation that one or two islands in the archipelago may be experiencing cannot be generalized to all of them.”

She pointed out that the smaller islands of El Hierro, La Gomera and La Palma “do not suffer from tourist pressure and overcrowding.”

Fodor’s published it’s “No List” last December, including the Canaries as one of eight destinations that responsible tourists should avoid easing pressure.

De León also indicated that local initiatives directed at tourists such as “campaigns related to traffic congestion and respect for protected natural spaces, or recommendations to consume local brands or local products are the best way to contribute to greater and better figures for the economy of each Canary Islander.”

De León claimed that the number of tourists to the islands had increased by 4% in 2025, and tourist spending was up 8.9% on the previous year.
