The Canarian Government could introduce a moratorium on holiday rentals, following the recent rise in registration of VV (Vivienda Vacacional) properties.
The director general of tourist planning for the Canarian Government, Miguel Ángel Rodríguez, told Lancelot TV that the rise in holiday rentals over the last 10 months has been so sharp that a complete halt may have to be considered on the sector.
Rodríguez is regarded as the architect of the draft Canarian law on Holiday Rentals that will severely restrict the sector. However, a moratorium was not proposed in the draft.
When asked whether a moratorium should also be placed on new hotels and tourist apartments, Rodríguez claimed that there were currently fewer hotel beds available than there were a few years ago. “This loss of tens of thousands of tourist places has caused a loss of income and employment.”
While the Canarian Government claim that the law will help to address the housing crisis, many in the property sector believe that the real motive behind the law is longstanding opposition to the holiday rental sector from the powerful hotel lobby.
