Tinajo Mayor Jesús Machín has said that he is In advanced talks with the Cabildo to put an end to parking at Timanfaya.
The plan to end visitors’ parking at the Fire Mountain tourist attraction has been in the air for some time, and has become more urgent recently as the LZ-67 road through the national park has become regularly congested with queues of cars waiting to enter Timanfaya.
The plan is to establish a large parking area for visitors at Mancha Blanca, six kilomretres away, from where tourists will be transported to the Fire Mountains in shuttle buses. Machín said “There’s no need to destroy more landscapes – the carpark needs to be where the National Parks Commission recommended: at the site of Los Dolores (the church at Mancha Blanca). I would have preferred it to have been underground, but that wasn’t possible.”
Machín also claimed that turning Timanfaya into a “park and ride” destination would improve the economy of Tinajo. “How can we incentivise our local economy?” he asked, “Well; with these parking places, a tourist information office and developing our restaurants, our cheeses and our bodegas.”
Machín also called for the Canarian Government to convert La Santa’s harbour into the first port of refuge on the island’s north-west coast. “At La Santa there is an important fishing catch, and the harbour is currently not fit for purpose” he claimed.
