The ruling group of Teguise Ayuntamiento lost its majority yesterday after councillor Alejandro Ramírez resigned his posts and joined the opposition group.
Ramírez was elected for the Popular Party (PP) in 2023 and appointed as Councillor for Sports and Citizen Participation. He formed part of Teguise’s ruling group under Mayor Olivia Duque, consisting of seven members of the Coalición Canaria, three from the PP and one Vox member.
Now, the Teguise opposition benches, consisting of eight Socialists, two Nueva Canarias members and Ramírez, outnumber the ruling group. Later today, Ramírez will clarify if he plans to support a no-confidence vote that could make Socialist councillor Marcos Bergaz the new Mayor of Teguise.
Ramírez’s resignation appears to have been motivated by frustration. “I came here because of sport, to work for sport, and if they don’t let me work, I’m going home and I’m not going to sneak out of the back door,” he announced on social media.
