The Guardia Civil have closed access to the islands summit due to the snow and frost which now covers the roads as temperatures fall below zero.

Sheets of snow and ice cover the roads leading the Gran Canaria’s summit which has lead to the Guardia Civil closing the road for the safety of its residents. The Guardia Civil have also advised Gran Canaria residents and tourists to adjust driving speeds, increase the normal distance between yourself and the car ahead of you and to keep the headlights on.

In the early hours of this morning the Canary Islands saw among the lowest temperatures in Spain, with Tenerife recording -4.9 degrees Celsius and Gran Canaria recording -0.3. Additionally, Tenerife also saw gusts of up to 131 km/h.
