The discovery of a 3-metre long Giant Squid has fascinated the Canaries and highlighted the richness of our local marine life.

Researcher Teo Lucas recovered the squid on Saturday after being notified of its presence, and discovered the freshest specimen of the species he had ever encountered. It took three men to lift the 225-kilo monster into the boat, and according to Lucas “it was still twitching with reflex actions”. The creature had bite marks, probably from a pilot whale, which probably contributed to its death.
Experts believe the deep channel between Tenerife and La Gomera may be one of the world’s giant squid hotspots, and the presence of Pilot ewhales and Sperm Whales also means that remains are more frequently found near the islands than elsewhere.
