After Famara residents complained about the placement of rubbish bins on Famara beach, the bins have been removed with informative signs put in their place.
Cabildo Enviroment Councillor, Elena Solís, has welcomed the fact that the Teguise Ayuntamiento removed the rubbish bins from the beaches after the Famara local council proposed that they send the wrong message.
The Famara local council proposed that the rubbish bins “are sending the wrong message, that we leave our rubbish here, when we are the ones responsible for our waste.
We should not leave rubbish in bins that are located in beautiful protected spaces, such as the beaches in Famara.”.
They stated that “the biggest problem is when animals rummage through the rubbish, taking it out of the bin and scatter it around the beaches. When the winds are strong it also blows rubbish out of the bins and across the beach.”.
Because of this the bins were removed and replaced with signs in both Spanish and English which state “the rubbish bins have been removed from this beach as requested by the residents of Famara. The rubbish bins in Natural Spaces are a mistake, we must take responsibility for our rubbish. Thank you for your collaboration. TAKE YOUR RUBBISH WITH YOU”.
