Mercadona have limited the amount of potatoes that each customer can buy to 2 kilos.

The rule currently only applies to the small papas de arrugar, new potatoes used to make the popular Canarian wrinkled potatoes side dish.

Mercadona say that the measure is to “stop hoarding and profiteering” while there is a shortage of potato imports. Similar measures were introduced on toilet paper at the start of the 2020 lockdown, and last year on sunflower oil, following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Potato imports to Lanzarote mainly come from England at this time of year, and the discovery of Colorado beetles in some crops has led to a ban on potato imports to the Canaries.
