Parking problems in Puerto del Carmen will hopefully be eased by the Cabildo’s approval of the conversion of Tias’s old vehicle pound into a public carpark.
For several years, the only time locals or tourists have been to the huge underground parking area located beneath the Puerto Cinco shopping centre on Calle Anzuelo is when they’ve been unfortunate or careless enough to find their vehicle towed away by the grua (tow-truck). In the resort’s crowded back streets, it’s a relatively common occurrence, especially for new arrivals who don’t know the area, and parking has been a perennial problem since the renovation of the Avenida de las Playas over twelve years ago.
The idea of converting the pound has been proposed for several years, but a 2019 tender to complete the works necessary to convert the depositary into a car park failed to attract any bidders. After redrafting the proposal, the Cabildo received four bids and has awarded the tender for the works contract to Mantenimientos Marmape, SL, who will be paid just over €100,000 for the renovation works, which are to be completed in a period of four months.
The Cabildo’s Public Works councillor, Jacobo Medina, said “the building of Puerto del carmen’s old vehicle pound on Calle Anzuelo will be transformed into a modern public carpark with 65 spaces, two of which will be for disabled motorists. This will partly alleviate the huge demand for parking spaces in this zone.”
