A 28-year-old Irish tourist has been fined €20,000 after assaulting a taxi driver.

The incident took place on an unspecified Monday night in Puerto del Carmen, when the taxi driver picked up a man who smelt strongly of drink. When asked where he wanted to go, the man replied that he didn’t know and had no money.

The driver asked the man to leave, and when the tourist paid no attention  he got out, opened the back door and repeated the request. In response, the tourist kicked him, knocking him to the ground where he banged his head.

Guardia Civil officers arrived and arrested the tourist, who offered “some resistance” before being taken into custody. An Arrecife court later sentenced him to four months prison, suspended as it was his first offence, and ordered the payment of €20,000 compensation before he would be allowed to leave the island.
