The Canarian Tourism Minister, Yessica de León, has claimed that the Canaries could lose a million tourists in 2024 as a result of the CO2 emission rights that airlines will be obliged to pay for from Jan 1st.

De León said that the European directive introducing emission rights “would cost the Canaries a million tourists and 40,000 jobs” and described the emissions rights requirements as a “a tax designed for continental territory, and another mobility system”.

The Minister also pointed out that the Canaries accounted for 30% of all Spanish income from tourism, band requested that national government gave the islands the consideration they deserve.
