Today the Cabildo have reached an agreement for the management and operation of the Islote de la Fermina.

The Islote de la Fermina lies off the coast just next to the Gran Hotel and has been closed to the public for several years, despite being the site of a spectacular swimming pool complex designed by César Manrique.

It is known by locals as the Islote de Amor (Love Island) by locals, because young couples used to go there to seek a bit of privacy.

The new agreement establishes that the CACT will be responsible for the management of the Islote that will be used for leisure, water activities and have a cafeteria, as well as being the headquarters for the Lanzarote Coastal Observatory.

The approval this morning “will allow us to face the opening of a leisure and recreation centre that will give Arrecife the opportunity for the future that it deserves”, said Cabildo President, María Dolores Corujo. “We will continue to give our full cooperation to make this space available to the citizens as soon as possible”, she added.

The agreement is valid for four years, with an annual extension for a maximum of another four years.
