Lanzarote’s Cabildo has installed a water container on the isle of Alegranza in order to help birds survive the current drought conditions.
Cabildo councillor Jorge Peñas, said “It’s been discovered that the birds have problems breeding here given the aridity, which means that many of them have to fly to Lanzarote to drink, where they also encounter many risks. This container will allow the birds to suffer as little as possible from the high temperatures, and reduce the risk that they may disappear because of the lack of rain”,
The container, which resembles a large paddling pool, was installed on Thursday, and is specially designed for local birds of prey such as falcons, Egyptian vultures and eagles. It’s colour matches the terrain where it is located “to avoid environmental impact from land and air and so that birds will approach more easily.”
