San Bartolomé has become the first council in Spain to permit motorists to park in the entrances to their own property.

A vado municipal is an entry that allows motorists to cross pavements in order to access garages or workplaces, usually via a slope. Permission to do this is granted by the council on payment of an annual charge.  The general rule is that parking in front of such entries is always forbidden.

However, yesterday San Bartolomé approved a motion that will permit any registered resident of a property to park in front of the entry as well as to use it for access.

Mayor Isidro Pérez said “With this ordinance, we are going to allow homeowners to use these spaces to park, not just to access their garages.”

The measure is intended to free up parking spaces in Playa Honda which, along with several other towns on Lanzarote, is becoming increasingly congested and short of public parking spaces.
