Trade unions have requested that the work of hotel chambermaids is classed as a “dangerous profession”, in order to allow earlier retirement.

They have submitted the proposal as the Spanish Government revises its catalogue of jobs that are officially recognised as “dangerous.”

If the proposal is adopted, chambermaids will be permitted to retire at the age of 58 after serving 20 years of employment.

Unions claim that, on the Canaries, there is unanimous agreement between them and business federations on the issue, which will recognise “the nature of chambermaids’ jobs and the physical exhaustion it entails”.

“This is a sensible, viable proposal that would improve the quality of employment as well as the sector itself”, claimed the unions, urging the government to “recognise the work of chambermaids.”
