The Canarian Government officially declared an energy emergency on the Canaries yesterday.
The declaration is intended to highlight the critical situation of energy supplies on the islands and facilitate processes to install renewable energy sources on the islands. Canarian Energy Minister Mariano Zapato said “Now is the time for urgent measures”.
However, the application of “urgent measures” may also mean less-strict environmental and planning procedures, which take time. Lanzarote’s Cabildo has recently appealed against a windfarm in Las Caletas proposed under an urgent measures clause.
