Lanzarote could see average temperatures rise by 3 degrees by the end of this century, according to a report from the University of La Laguna in Tenerife.
The forecasts, carried out by the Group for Observation of Earth and the Atmosphere (GOTA) , also predict worst case scenarios in which the islands suffer 45 “tropical nights” (nights when the temperature does not fall below 20 degrees) each year. These will be more likely i9n the eastern islands and coastal areas.
Heatwaves are predicted to become less frequent but longer lasting when they do happen, while rainfall could be reduced by up to 30% throughout the islands.
