A con-man who posed as a workplace health and safety inspector and carried out scams on various islands including Lanzarote has been arrested in San Bartolomé de Tirajana, on Gran Canaria.

The man would visit various businesses while posing as a health and safety inspector. He would then detect various deficiencies and ask business owners to pay out for replacement First Aid kits or warning signs.

Victims were charged between €60 and €750 for safety equipment that they did not require. The con-man would often pick on employees whose managers were absent, and assure them that he had agreed the inspection with their superiors.

The 43-year-old man worked the same scam on Tenerife, Gran Canaria and Lanzarote and has been identified by 12 victims, who he swindled out of a total of €3,000.
