Spain ended 2021 with more than 40% of vehicles failing to renew their ITV tests by the recommended date.
This is the highest level of ITV absenteeism ever recorded, and could have serious consequences for road safety.
Older vehicles are more likely to be involved in accidents, with the rate of accidents involving vehicles over 15 years of age more than double that of those that are five years old or under.
In addition to this, driving with an expired VAT can incur fines of €200. The Traffic Department
now operates radar cameras that can read the registration numbers of cars and issue fines automatically if an up-to-date ITV is not logged.
