Today is International Day Against Gender Violence, and the date will be marked with a demonstration in Arrecife today at 6.30 pm in memoriam of victims.

This takes place in a year when the subject of “vicarious violence” has become widely known due to the horrifying case in Tenerife of the murders of Anna and Olivia by their father, who wished to cause as much suffering to their mother as possible.

The demo will gather at Cuatro Esquinas (the end of the Charco with the whale skeleton), and progress towards the Casa Amarilla on Calle Real. All are welcome, and organisers have requested that masks be worn.

A 5km race along the seafront of Costa Teguise last weekend also raised awareness of the issue. The Teguise Purple race attracted more than 350 participants of all ages.

A shorter, 2.8 kilometre run is also planned for this Saturday at 12.30 pm, in the Parque José Ramirez Cerdo on Arrecife’s sea front. Participation is free and numbers can be picked up on the evening before the race, or from 9-11 am on the day.
