The €390,000 investment will go towards changes to the bridge and surrounding area, along with new lights to be installed.
The money put forward by the Lanzarote Cabildo will be used to fix the drawbridge, install new lights in the area and improve the walk from the bridge to the castle.
The project aims to repair the wooden drawbridge, bridge lifting mechanism as well as the wooden railing on the bridge.
The light fixtures will be changed for smaller ones, where excess space will be filled in with the same volcanic rock used in the construction of the bridge.
Cabildo President, María Dolores Corujo, highlighted the neglect that the bridge, walkway and castle had suffered. The Castillo de San Gabriel is a popular landmark and considered an important cultural asset to Arrecife, “for which the Cabildo have decided to pay attention to the repair and upkeep of the Las Bolas bridge and San Gabriel Castle”, Corujo explained.
Heritage Councilor, Ariagona González reinforced Corujo’s views “Both monuments have centuries of history behind them. We must preserve these symbols of Lanzarote.”
