Last week, private chef Nerina at Event And Catering Solutions Lanzarote swapped sunny Lanzarote for the wild, windswept beauty of Scotland’s Outer Hebrides.
From June 4th to 14th, she’ll be stepping in as chef aboard the expedition yacht Zuza, sailing to the remote and awe-inspiring UNESCO World Heritage Site of St Kilda.
A Chef’s Life at Sea
Nerina’s temporary role as a yacht chef is a fantastic opportunity – and a reminder of the exciting possibilities for culinary professionals who love the ocean. If you’re a chef considering work at sea, Nerina has some invaluable advice:
- Essential Qualifications: First aid, sea survival courses, and STCW (Standards of Training, Certification, and Watchkeeping) are must-haves.
- Sailing Skills: A Competent Crew certification (which Nerina obtained with Endeavour Sailing in Puerto Calero) is highly beneficial.
- Tax & Logistics: For Spanish residents, keeping tax affairs in order (including SED declarations) is crucial, as is securing public liability insurance.
- Catering Expertise: Tailored qualifications and experience in high-pressure, remote environments make all the difference – along with strong sea legs!
Are you a keen cook and want to learn how to cook at sea?
Nerina will be back to Lanzarote soon, and with that comes brand new courses to teach chefs (or those who want to be chefs) how to cook on a boat! Whether you dream of being a chef on a super yacht, a commercial ship, a boat, or at sea in any capacity Nerina will be able to teach you how.
