International Women’s Day will be celebrated all over Lanzarote today, with several events organised by the Cabildo, Ayuntamientos and NGOs.
The Parque Ramírez Cerda in Arrecife is one of the main centres of activities, and will be the location of the island’s main gathering and demonstration this evening. At 4 pm there’ll be a workshop to prepare posters and at 6 pm speeches will be given before the demonstration commences at 7 pm.
This year’s 8M (8th March) demonstrations throughout Spain will be the first important ones since the pandemic started in 2020, and feminist groups are urging participation with the statement “It’s important to re-establish the power that develops in the streets.” The slogan for the demonstration is “Con Todas, A Por Todas” (With All, For All”)
Earlier on, the first all- woman murga on Lanzarote, Las Revoltosas, will be performing at 1.30 pm in the Parque. Established in the 1980s, the carnival group are also currently the subject of an exhibition at the Casa Amarilla on Calle Real.
Several other events, workshops, talks and educational activities are scheduled all over the island today and in the coming days and weeks. They include an appearance by Amelia Tiganus in San Bartolomé’s Theatre on 10th March. Tiganus, a Romanian trafficking survivor and activist for the abolition of prostitution, will present her new book and screen a short film about prostitution on Lanzarote.
There’ll also be a mobile phone photo competition titled GRL PWR, a performance by rapper La Furia on April 9th. Many more activities and events are planned, and the Cabildo has posted an agenda of some of them here.
