The Canaries experienced the largest earth tremor of the last five years at 9.50 am on Friday morning.

The 4.8 magnitude quake occurred beneath the sea 123 miles from the southern tip of Lanzarote, about 60 kilometres north of Gran Canaria, and was felt by people on Gran Canaria and Fuerteventura.

Three smaller aftershocks followed the main tremor, although these were not felt by the general public.

Earthquakes of this magnitude cause people to feel light trembling or swaying, and noticeable shaking of many objects.
