Despite waking up to find that it was raining in August, plenty of islanders headed to Playa Reducto on Sunday morning to watch the Women’s World Cup Final on the big screen. They included several British residents on the island, and a good sprinkling of other nationalities, too.
Meanwhile, many bars in the resorts also filled up and did great business during the game, which resulted in disappointment for England fans and joy for Spain.
Despite a bright start, England’s Lionesses never really recovered from Spanish captain Olga Carmona’s 29th minute goal and Spain went on to become the only other team after Germany to win both men’s and women’s World Cups.
Girls’ and women’s football already has a keen following on Lanzarote, and this victory is only likely to increase local interest and support for the female game.
