The Canarian government has suspended all classes from Wednesday until Monday the 16th of October due to the current heatwave.
Poli Suárez, the Canarian education minister, said that the decision was taken out of “responsibility” for “the safety of all the children in the Canaries” after various reports of pupils fainting due to the heat. Many schools have said that the situation is “unsustainable”, and teachers’ committees, parents’ associations and unions had all requested action.
Schools will be officially closed tomorrow (Wednesday) and Friday the 13th, and Thursday 12th is a public holiday, meaning that classes will not be resumed until next Monday at the earliest.
However, there is currently no indication that the heatwave will break, with maximum daytime temperatures in the low to mid 30s predicted until Monday.
