Lanzarote and three other Canary islands will hold marches against mass tourism on April 20th.
Organizers have highlighted that they are not “against the arrival of tourists in a controlled and sustainable manner”, but claim that “Lanzarote is no longer sustainable and cannot support the more than three million annual tourists.”
The anonymous organisers claim that the island is “collapsing socially and environmentally”, citing the “impossibility of accessing housing, the collapse of the waste management system, the lack of water for consumption and the agricultural sector, collapsed health services, the reduction of quality of life, and protected spaces that are overrun and affected by environmental infractions or the loss of biodiversity.”
The protest will take place at 12 midday on the 20th April at the bandstand in the Parque Ramírez Cerda on Arrecife’s seafront.
Canarian President Fernando Clavijo has expressed “concern” at the demonstrations, which will also take place on Tenerife, Gran Canaria add Fuerteventura, and said “tourists who come to our island and spend money should not be told off.”
“It would be irresponsible…to attack an activity that is our main source of employment and wealth,” added Clavijo.
