The Partido Popular on Lanzarote has called on the Spanish Government to add immediate reinforcements to the border police at César Manrique Airport.
The call follows yet another Thursday in which scores of newly arrived tourists were forced to wait for hours after their flights, and comes while the leader of the Spanish Government, Pedro Sánchez, is holidaying on the island.
The PP warns that the airport delays could cause “dangerous situations”, especially at busy times such as this weekend, when many Spaniards take advantage of the long weekend to travel.
The PP said “We stand alongside the police and Guardia Civil unions, who have been denouncing this situation for months, leading to situation in which they are forced to work under immense stress while the Spanish Interior Ministry turns a deaf ear to their complaints.”
The PP’s complaint follows months of delays caused by low staffing. Lanzarote Airport is estimated to have almost half the number of police agents recommended by the EU.
