Lanzarote, famous for its potatoes, faces a shortage of spuds after the discovery of the Colorado beetle in crops in Hampshire halted all imports.
Gustavo Crespo, President of the Potato Association of Los Valles, told La Voz de Lanzarote that in summer “almost 100% of potatoes come from England” because local suppliers cannot compete on price margins.
Crespo predicted that there will be a shortage of potatoes for about a month, until imports from Scotland and Denmark start to arrive.
He also said Lanzarote’s potato crop, which usually arrives around Christmas time, would be delayed as farmers are unwilling to plant seed potatoes because of the current water shortages.
