A councillor for Nueva Canarias has called for Playa Honda to be declared a “stressed zone” in terms of housing, which would allow measures such as rent freezes to be introduced.
Pablo Yera said “Playa Honda has become a place where it’s impossible to find a flat. This is because it has stopped being a residential area and a dormitory town, and become an area without a plan.”
He continued “Playa Honda doesn’t know what it wants to be: a place where workers live, a shopping zone, an industrial zone or a tourist area.”
Last week Arrecife voted against declaring itself a stressed zone, claiming that the rents that would be imposed by an official index based on house values would be higher than existing ones.
