Esther Gómez, Councillor for of the Equo environmentalist party in Arrecife’s Ayuntamiento, will today propose creating a register of all holiday rentals in the capital.
“One of the most important issues about holiday lets is the pressure they place on neighbourhoods, “ she told Radio Lanzarote yesterday. “Previously, it was impossible to see a holiday apartment in neighbourhoods like Argana . These were residential neighborhoods. Today we have nonsense such as tents on a rooftop being rented out,”, she said,
Gómez explained that Equo believes a municipal register should be created to monitor activity in the holiday rental sector, which is currently unregulated, meaning that there is no controls or inspections of holiday rentals offered on online platforms.
“Holiday rentals uproot neighborhoods. Where before you knew each other and had a social network, now there is a constant coming and going of people. And there are neighborhoods that are no longer accessible to people with normal salaries because holiday rentals have raised the price so much”, concluded Gómez.
Gómez added that the “housing crisis and brutal rents” must be addressed. “We are forecasting that we’ll soon be in a very difficult situation,” she said. “It is not that the rent can’t be paid; it is that there is nowhere to rent”.
