If you enter a shop or bar tomorrow, you’re likely to hear the strange chanting sing-song sound of children calling out the winning numbers in the world’s biggest lottery, El Gordo.
El Gordo is big not because it makes people millionaires – only a few people win really big – but because it gives out more cash prizes than any other lottery, which are often shared by groups, associations or whole neighbourhoods.
You can still buy a ticket – a decimo (tenth share) costs €20. The draw starts tomorrow, goes on all morning and several villages and barrios all over Spain, are likely to be popping the cava by lunchtime.
