Spain’s National Geographic institute has published data showing that Lanzarote was the Canary Island least affected by earthquakes last year.

Although Timanfaya is constantly in motion, no serious seismic activity was recorded on land in Lanzarote in 2023. However, the strongest quake of December 2023 occurred in the sea 37 miles east of Lanzarote, although it was not felt on land.

The Canaries saw 26.8% of all volcanic activity in Spain in 2023, with a total of 2,017 cases of registered seismic activity.

Tenerife saw 621 tremors, while La Palma suffered 397 as part of the post-eruptive process following the eruption of 2021 that created the new volcano named Tajogaite.

The most active area is currently the ocean trench between Tenerife and Gran Canaria.
