The Council of Lanzarote’s Biosphere Reserve has spoken up against the building of new roads on Lanzarote.

Members of the board of the council met yesterday and, apart from a few exceptions in cases where there is unquestionable demand, came out in opposition to new roads.

Urban planner Alfonso Sanz, author of the report Territory, Mobility and Roads – a New Perspective for Lanzarote, stated that Lanzarote was already “hyper-motorised” and that climate change required a change in travel habits.

He called for roads to be “complete”, allowing for public and private vehicles, cycles and pedestrians.

Cabildo President Oswaldo President said, “we need to reduce the use of private transport, then think about the roads.”
