Yaiza Mayor Óscar Noda has announced that he will transfer council-owned land to the Canarian Government so that a secondary school can be constructed in Playa Blanca.
No date has been announced for the procedure, which will require technical specifications from the regional government, but Noda reminded listeners that the land transfer proposal has existed for some time.
A new school has long been one of Yaiza’s most important projects, given that hundreds of schoolchildren have to travel over 20 kilometres to the Yaiza IES (Secondary School) near Macher every day.
The population of Playa Blanca has doubled in the last 20 years, and with an official population of 13,205 it is currently the second-largest town on the island after the capital Arrecife.
