56% of Lanzarote residents see housing as the biggest problem on the island, according to a recent survey carried out by the Cabildo.

The survey is an annual project that attempts to gauge public opinion on the island. This year it shows that most people think the economic situation on the island is good (40%) or normal (20%) – a slight decrease from last year.

60% say quality of life has worsened in the last year, while only 8% say it has improved.

Housing is easily the biggest problem cited by respondents, with 56% of people putting it in first place. Immigration comes second, at 30%, followed by health (13%), the cost of living (10%), over-development (9%) and quality of work (8%)

48% of those surveyed believe that immigration is positive, while 36% think it is negative. Two thirds of those surveyed think that the relations between people of different nationalities are good, while 21% believe they are poor.

There is also widespread dissatisfaction with working conditions, as over 51% say that workers’ rights are not respected. Almost half of all respondents believe their job has affected their health. The survey was carried out by phone on a sample of 700 subjects in September this year.
