Tonight will see one of the most important events in Lanzarote’s Easter programme, as the Santo Encuentro (Holy Meeting) takes place in Arrecife.
At around 8pm, the statues of Christ and the Virgin Mary will be removed separately from the Church of San Ginés, and each one will be paraded at shoulder-height around the city streets, accompanied by mournful music and a constantly pounding drum beat.
The statues finally meet face-to-face in the Plazuela, when a moment of silence is observed. This is followed by a sermon from the local priest, before the images are returned to the church. It’s a solemn and moving event, and one that tourists rarely see.
