Canarian tourist business federations, including Lanzarote’s FTL, have called for the islands to be exempt from green taxes which will apply to international flights in Europe from 2024 onwards.
The “green tax” will apply to aircraft emissions on flights within European airspace, but tourist federations believe it will “increase the price of holidays unnecessarily”.
Flights between the Canary Islands and between the islands and the Spanish mainland will be exempted from the taxes, but the tourist federations have called for a similar exemption on international tourist flights to the Canaries, owing to the importance of tourism for the economy of the islands, and have accused the Spanish government of a “lack of firmness” in recent negotiations on the tax.
