Spain’s prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, will not attend the funeral of Queen Elizabeth in London today. Instead, he will send his foreign minister, José Manuel Albares.
Spain will be represented by the current King, Felipe VI and his wife Queen Letizia, in their roles as heads of state but the Brtisih royal family also extended a personal invitation to the ex-King, Juan Carlos and his estranged wife, Queen Sofia.
Sánchez is aware of the bad publicity that could be caused by any photo of him with the disgraced ex-King, and both Spain’s royal palace, the Zarzuela, and the Prime Minister’s office at La Moncloa have denied that Juan Carlos will be part of the official Spanish delegation.
However, Juan Carlos does not tend to follow orders. Two years ago, he returned to Spain for a short trip from Abu Dhabi, despite being prohibited from doing so by the government. If he does fly to London, the ex-King also faces a British lawsuit from his ex-lover Corinna Sayn Wittgenstein, who claims she was illegally monitored and threatened by Spain’s intelligence agency at the King’s request.
