Arrecife Mayor Astrid Pérez has presented a €2 million project to pedestrianise part of the seafront facing Playa del Reducto, the capital’s town beach.

The project will remove traffic from the Avenida Fred Olsen, from Calle Guenia to just before the Gran Hotel. Traffic that would have used the seafront road will be redirected within Arrecife.

The new pedestrianized area will have shaded areas, a cycle lane, new fittings and lighting and “the removal of architectural barriers”.

Pérez has previously described the project as “something like Playa de las Canteras.” Las Canteras is the city beach of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, and has been totally pedestrianised, with cycles and scooters also forbidden.

The project will be funded by Next Generation funds from the EU, and complies with European directives that require emission-free zones to be established in cities above a certain size.
