As of next week, face masks will no longer be compulsory in Spanish hospitals, health centres, chemists and other health-related environments.
The Spanish government is expected to lift the restrictions next week. The only exceptions will be hospital zones with vulnerable people, such as surgery and post-surgery, intensive care units and immunodeficiency departments.
Masks will continue to be recommended by Spanish health services but, apart from the exceptions mentioned above, they will no longer be compulsory.
Obligatory face mask rules were first introduced in May 2020, two months after the first lockdown. In February 2022, mask use outdoors and in shared public places was no longer compulsory, and in February this year masks were no longer required on public transport.
