The Canarian Public Health department has issued advice to vulnerable citizens following the arrival of a heavy calima yesterday. Vulnerable people includes the elderly, children, and people with respiratory conditions or heart problems.
The calima is unlikely to pass immediately – Spain’s weather agency AEMET has issued a yellow alert for dust in the air that lasts until midnight on Wednesday, alongside a wind alert until Tuesday.
The calima appears to be stronger than AEMET’s prediction, which states that visibility will be reduced to 3 kilomentres.
Canarian Health sources recommend that vulnerable citizens avoid prolonged exposure to outside air and advise staying indoors with the windows closed and avoiding physical activity in the open air.
