The Canarian Government has issued a response to the demands of many of the demonstrators last Saturday, rejecting calls for a tourist tax and a moratorium on tourism.
A motion proposing these measures by the opposition Nueva Canarias-Bloque Canarias party was voted down by the ruling group in the Canarian Parliament, consisting mainly of the Coalición Canaria and Partido Popular.
A proposal to restrict property sales to non-resident foreigners “for speculative purposes” was also rejected.
The two measures that were approved by the government were a resolution not to occupy more territory for tourist purposes, and the introduction of charges for non-residents visiting natural protected spaces.
