The Canaries has the lowest birth rate in Spain, according to the National Statistics Institute.
just over 230,000 children were born in first nine months of 2023, 2% fewer than in the same period of 2022.
This continues a trend that has been present for some years now and means that the average woman on the Canaries gives birth to 0.86 children.
The figures also show that the islands have the lowest life expectancy in Spain, with an average lifespan of 81.8 years. The death rate has also increased by 9% on last year, with 8.5 deaths per 1,000 citizens.
