Arrecife Ayuntamiento yesterday paid tribute to the “father of Spanish physics”, Blas Cabrera Felipe, and announced its intention to create a room dedicated to his life and work in the seafront building that was once the Parador de Turismo.
The Parador was part of a state-owned chain of hotels until 1970 and is now the base of Spain’s distance-learning university, the UNED. Inside can be found some of the finest murals created by César Manrique.
Blas Cabrera Felipe was born in Arrecife 1898 and directed Spain’s Laboratory of Physics Research until 1937.He was also Rector of Madrid’s Central University before being purged by Franco’s regime and forced into exile in Mexico, where he died in 1945.
