Mariano Zapato, the Canarian Government’s Minister of Ecological Transition, and Lanzarote Cabildo’s councillor of Public Works, Jacobo Medina, met yesterday to discuss the topic of dead and dying palm trees by Lanzarote’s roadsides.

Medina said “The accumulation of these remains on traffic routes is resulting in a negative image,” and expressed his concern over the “countless stumps resulting from felled trees.”

Zapata explained “This issue and the affected areas have been brought to our attention so that action can be taken as quickly as possible on this problem that affects the image of Lanzarote and its roads.”

3,200 of the 83,000 palms on the island have been treated against the Diocalandra infestation that has killed many trees.
