Following a year of refurbishment and renovation of UD Lanzarote’s home ground, the Ciudad Deportiva, Los Rojillos finally returned for the first home match of the season on Sunday September 7th versus CD Tenerife C. Ian Lane reports.
Lanzarote dominated the opening half hour and had several good chances to take the lead. However; in the 32nd minute the visitors crafted a clever counter-attack and silenced the home fans with a goal to lead 0-1 at the break.
Seconds into the second half and Rojillos winger Nadjib hit the ball from 25 yards with power and dip, only to see the crossbar come to the aid of the Tenerife side. As early as the 50th minute, play-acting tactics were evident from the visitors as players under 23 years of age were dropping like flies with cramp. It is so disappointing to see this drilled into young players.
But the time-wasting was in vain: in the 78th minute, last season’s joint top scorer Adrián Machín headed Lanzarote level and two minutes later justice was served when Rojillos captain Raúl blasted home for a 2-1 win and maximum points.
A week later Lanzarote travelled to La Palma to play SD Tenisca. The locals hadn’t lost at home for two years and in the second half Lanzarote were denied what they thought were two legitimate goals.
The resulting anger caused the The Rojillos to lose concentration and they were made to pay for the lapse when the home side scored in the 74th minute, then doubled the misery in addedon time. After just two games Lanzarote are mid table in the RFEF 3 (Fifth Tier).
