The famous belén at Yaiza, which was officially opened on Friday evening, has once again surprised visitors with its dramatic design and artistic accomplishment.

In previous years, the belén has echoed Lanzarote’s island shape, with visitors wandering around it, but this year the work has been designed to emulate a volcanic crater, which people enter in an immersive experience.

In the centre of the crater is a detailed model representing the town of Playa Blanca, the seafront at Arrecife and the Salinas de Janubio. The belén also features a working waterfall that visitors can stand behind and, as usual, a rumbling volcano that emits smoke, flame and lava.

The 400-metre nativity scene, created by council workers Gabino Cabrera, Pancho Ortiz, Orlando Caraballo and Aridane Cabrera, is full of charming details, scale models of local churches and buildings and real plants.

Yaiza was a pioneer in the revival of the belén tradition on Lanzarote and, although several other towns now boast magnificent nativity scenes, Yaiza’s 2025 display shows that it is still setting the bar even higher. It’s an unmissable visit if you’re on Lanzarote from now until the 6th January.
